Ramadan is almost upon us

August 30, 2008 · 9 Comments

Already a year has passed since last Ramadan and we find this blessed month is almost upon us once again.

Today is the 29th of Sha’aban and since the lunar month is 29 or 30 days long this means that the 1st of Ramadan could be either tomorrow or on Monday although calculations show that it is more likely to be Monday. You can read some of the reasons for the controversy surrounding calculated moon sightings here.

This evening, as with every Ramadan, I’ll be listening to the ‘Isha prayer broadcast over loud speaker from the several mosques in the vicinity of our house and waiting to hear if Taraweeh prayer begins. If the congregations prays Taraweeh, I will know that Ramadan is beginning tomorrow and it will be time to send hubby along to the supermarket to buy laban to drink with our dawn meal (suhoor) and I will take the dates out of the freezer.

Talking of dates, Ahmed over on the Saudi Jeans blog posted the links to two very interesting Aramco articles about dates yesterday. Well worth a read or just open the links to drool over the photos of the dates. I really had no idea there were so many varieties of dates, the ones I am most acquainted with are the Sekki (date with a dry top), Ajwah (from Madinah), Khalasa reputedly the best come from Hofuf in the Al-Ahsa region of Saudi Arabia) and Deglet Nour (these are the dates I am used to eating in Algeria).

Over the next month you can expect lots of blog posts about food and Ramadan in Saudi insha’Allah.

May this Ramadan be a time of blessings, understanding and building and repairing of relationships and friendships, ameen.

    Assalaamu alaikum,

I’m also looking forward to your posts sis Itto; I do hope you will have time to blog during Ramadan. :) I studied German for 6 or 7 years and even did 1 year of German at university but found it difficult and gave up! I had converted to Islam around that time and switched from a French/German degree to French/Islamic Studies.

Rayhana: Ameen. And may you and your family have a wonderful and blessed month also.

Ammena: Looking forward to hearing about your Ramadan over there in Canada… masha’Allah so many of us blogging from all over the globe. Just in these replies, Morocco, Malaysia, Canada and KSA!
