A delicious selection of Arabic mezze (antipasti and apperatifs)

From the top, clockwise: lentil soup, samboosa, wara ‘inab (rice stuffed vineleaves), Syrian Makdous (spicy, walnut stuffed, pickled aubergines), Kalamata olives, Palestinian style felafel (stuffed with spicy onions) and M’batan (Libyan potato wedges stuffed with spiced meat).

Perfect for breaking the fast during Ramadan.

    please please please tell me you did not cook them all… mashallah if you did but it just makes me feel soooooooooooo inadequate…. :( Only joking
    How is Ramadan so far? mine very quiet, haven’t started the cooking for others rounds yet and I’m dreading it lol

    Is there a difference between a samoosa and samboosa ? Can yo send me the lentil soup recipe ? Lots of stuffed things ;-)

    Ines… LOL, I only made the soup! The other things I bought although my neighbour made the m’batan. ;)

    Susie… No shame, as I said, I bought most of it. That’s the beauty of Saudi Arabia, lots of yummy take away thing like this even in the supermarkets!

    Carimah… Essentially no difference. Different countries have different names for similar things. Borek in Algeria, Samosa in India/Pakistan, Samboosa or samboosak in the Gulf areas… they are all filo type pastry with tasty filling, fried before eating although I have taken to baking them quite often now. Will send you the lentil soup recipe inshaAllah.

    Aalya… will let you know the basic recipe/idea for the wedges insha’Allah. ;)

    We also make the Libyan mubutton a few times a year, along with their soup and of course cous-cousi with lamb. Yum!

    Hajar: Sadly the only thing in the photos I made myself was the soup.

    Queen O’Danile: I love Libyan couscous too!

    Henia: I can give you an idea of how to make the m’batan but the felafel was bought so I have no clue about that one unfortunately.

    long time! Mash’Allah the mezze looks tasty! Are the ones with the vine leaves filled with rice and mint? I love those, very nice as a starter or side dish and very healthy too!
